Students explore and map their place of origin and their environment

“The students of Primary Schools of the 3rd Educational Region of Chalkidiki explore and map their place of origin and their environment through investigating sources” 2017

The aim of the interdisciplinary educational program was to promote the local history, environmental protection and cultural heritage of the villages of Northeast Chalkidiki, by identifying and systematically investigating historical sources as well as mapping, with the use of field research and Web maps by students.

In particular, the participants, initially teachers and then students of the Department of Primary Education of AUTH, after being trained in identifying different types of historical sources, identifying geographic coordinates using GPS devices, and web maps (ArcGis,http://www.arcgis.com/features/index.html) by the archaeologists of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Chalkidiki & Mount Athos and Mr. Lambrinos, Professor of the School of Education of AUTH, worked in collaboration with the students of the participating Primary schools. The objective was to find cultural heritage elements of the place where they live, identify them and “upload” their coordinates to the web map, along with additional information obtained from the investigation of sources. The result of the action was a significant number of cultural interactive maps with a variety of information, easy to use and fun for primary school students.

The project concluded with an event at the cultural center of the Municipality of Aristotle in Ierissos on June 7th, 2017, where the presentation of all the activities carried out by the students during the school year took place. In addition, a collective volume was published with all the activities of the school units that participated in the project (ISBN 978-618-83718-0-4).
