The Archaeological Museum of Polygyros is located in the center of the capital of Chalkidiki on a pine-covered plot; its construction began in 1969 based on plans developed by Dimitris Fatouros. It first opened its doors in 1971 and it originally included an exhibition hall which housed objects representative of Chalkidiki. The large number of important and often unique artifacts that were discovered in recent years and were kept in storage at the Museum, as well as the conditions laid down by the Herakles Labropoulos Donation regarding the display of the entire Ioannis Labropoulos Collection, his father, in a hall at the Museum, led to its extension. The project “Expansion of the Archaeological Museum of Polygyros” was included in the Operational Program of Macedonia-Thrace of the 2007-2013 National Strategic Reference Framework and was completed in 2016, while the “Organization and implementation of the permanent exhibition of the Archaeological Museum of Polygyros in Chalkidiki – Phase I” was included in the Operational Program “Central Macedonia 2014-2020” and was implemented with the co-financing of the European Regional Development Fund.
