Excavation at “Karakoli” in Stratoni
In the Spring of 2009, in view of determining the location of metallurgical facilities in Stratoni, a military outpost in the form of a tower house was found at “Karakoli”, which was used from antiquity to the time of the National Resistance. Remnants of ancient household goods, part of the armament of the Ottoman Gendarmerie (police force), shell casings of E.L.A.S. fighters that were discovered during the excavation, turned the ruin into a monument-narrative of its long-standing history: tower-phryctoria during classical and Hellenistic period, karakoli (watchtower) at Madem Lakkos during the Ottoman occupation and stronghold of the Resistance groups against the German occupying powers.
The excavator of the outpost believes that such a semantically charged monument could act as a bearer of historical memory, as well as a cohesive link for the residents of NE Chalkidiki, against the backdrop of modern overdevelopment of the mining sector.
